Wildlife

We all know that our land is home to the jaguar, Chiricahua leopard frog, rare bats, returning ocelots, saguaros, orchids, cactus ferruginous pygmy owls, Sonoran Desert tortoises, and more. More than 7,000 species of plants and animals, including over half of the birds in North America, can be found here. But we, along with citizen scientists who joined us from all over the world, are also discovering previously unknown species in the wilds of the Sky Islands! By gathering knowledge and building the scientific base about plants and animals all across our region, we have the tools and ability to take actions to protect and preserve them. We thank the contributing photographers, volunteers, and scientists and staff who provided these images for our gallery. Images also come from Sky Island Alliance’s wildlife cameras, and wildlife cameras maintained in partnership with private landowners.

This gallery is not intended as a field guide, and does not represent all of the many species that can be found in the Sky Islands. You can explore even more Sky Island plant and animal photos, and a more comprehensive list of species, in our searchable Madrean Archipelago Biodiversity Assessment (MABA) Database of plant and animal records.
